NCBDA President's 2012 Message

Arlene Burney

Dear Band and Choral Directors:

Welcome to the Northern California Band Directors Association website. We hope you are all enjoying a much need summer vacation! This year marks the 50th Anniversary for the Nor-Cal Honor Band and we have special events planned for our honor band weekend which will be held at Chico State University from February 2nd-4th, 2012.

To celebrate our 50th year anniversary we have commissioned a work from the British composer Philip. This 8 minute original composition, on the natural resources of California, will be premiered by our NCBDA honor band at our concert.

We are very fortunate to have as our band director for this anniversary weekend Dr. Royce Tevis, the present director of bands at Chico State University. For thirty years he has earned national recognition for quality performances of both high school and university bands. Professor Tevis maintains an active schedule as guest conductor, clinician, adjudicator, and consultant of concert, marching and jazz bands throughout the United States. With diverse experience demonstrated at all grade levels in the, South, and West, his conducting and clinician appearances have received resounding acclaim from his peers, musicians and audiences. A nationally recognized music education authority, Dr Tevis is at the leading edge of innovations in the art of band directing.

Also included in the weekend events will be a clinic by one of our past presidents, Steve Dixon; “And Guitar Too?” which is a workshop for the newly minted Guitar Teacher. Presently this clinic is schedule for Friday afternoon, February 3rd.

New this year is a changed rehearsal and audition schedule. Please refer to the honor band tab on this website and look at the new schedule. We have changed our start time for auditions to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday February 2nd . Please make arrangements to leave earlier that morning to accommodate this new change. Registration will start at 3:00 p.m. and the audition meeting for directors listening to the live auditions will be at 3:15 p.m.

The audition materials for this honor band are available on this site. Click on Honor Band and then on solo selection for the cut versions of the All-State audition materials. All instrumentalists must also perform the selected scales. Please refer to the audition instructions. Yes, we will accept CD’s made for All-State as is, so you do not have to make a separate audition CD’s for NCBDA.

We are looking forward to a wonderful Honor Band and Honor Choir weekend! If you have any questions not answered on this website, please contact me directly with your questions at:
